Jhijhiya : A Traditional Mithila folk dance

Jhijhiya(also called jhijhari) is a cultural folk dance of mithila region of Nepal and India dedicated to Goddess Durga Bhairavi During Dashain festival. It is believed that when women perform this dance, negativity cannot touch them and their loved ones. Jhijhiya is performed  performed to protect one's children and society from witches and black magics. Jhijhiya is performed during Dashain festival,In the month of Ashwin (september/october).

After dancing at the holy place the Jhijhiya finally begins and The dance is performrd every evening for ten days for ten consecutive evening from the begining day (Ghatasthapana) to Bijaya Dashami. It is performed in a group of five to fifteen girls or women.Girls or women perform Jhijhiya by placing a clay pot on their head and dancing in a rotation manner .It is the type of dance in the form of round and round at the certain fixed place. Multiple holes are made on their clay pot and a fire lamp(Diya:a small pot with fire lamp burning in Ghee or mustardoil) is placed inside the pitcher.It is beleived that if any witch counted the holes of their pitch then the dancer dies immidietly.So,The jhijhiya performer don't stay constant place while performing Jhijhiya and continues Dancing thill the perfornamce Of jhijhiya End.There is also a tradition to perform jhijhiya in house to house of the local society.The performer goes to the different houses and perfom Jhijhiya by singing the song in front of houses and after performing they ask the owners of House for grains and food for the offering on the final day.On the last day of Vijaya dashami. Final prayers are performed and collected special foods and money used to perform Jhijhiya.
